Fallacies

Ad Hominem

Attacking your opponent’s character or personal traits instead of engaging with their argument.

Example: You are having a debate with a friend regarding politics, then in the
middle of your discourse, she pointed out your flaws and insecurities to distract
you from the real argument.

Strawman

Misrepresenting someone’s argument to make it easier to attack.

Example:

Loaded Question

Asking a question that has an assumption built to it so that it can’t be answered without appearing guilty.

Example:

Begging the Question

A circular argument in which the conclusion is included in the premise.

Example:

Black-or-White

Where two alternative states are represented as the only possibilities,  when in fact more possibilities exist.

Example: Most Scientians say: “It’s UP or I won’t go to college”, when in fact
there are more universities that offer the same quality of education.

Slippery Slope

Asserting that if we allow A to happen, then Z will consequently happen too, therefore A should not happen.

Example:

Burden of Proof

Saying that the burden of proof lies not with the person making the claim, but with someone else to disprove.

Example: In group conversations, some of your friends will not buy your story and say: “Patunayan mo nga?”

Composition/ Division

Assuming that what’s true about one part of something has to be applied to all, or other, parts of it.

Example: Parents and grandparents alike, it is their characteristic to compare
their experiences from our experiences and would most often say: “Kami
nga noon, nabuhay ng walang gadgets, bakit kayo?”

Bandwagon

Appealing to popularity or the fact that many people do something as an attempted form of validation.

Example: My friends and I often eat on fast food restaurants, since most of my
friends are ordering while I sit there waiting, I usually end up eating as well.

Appealing to Emotion

Manipulating an emotional response in place of a valid or compelling argument.

Example: Indigenous people from the mountains often go to Manila before
Christmas and beg for alms, they would bring their babies with them while
begging to receive sympathy from others.
